A drunk Hal finds Craig and
tries to punch him out only to stumble and fall. Emily takes Hal home where he blasts his ex-wife Barbara and apologizes to
Jennifer. Though Emily worries to Susan that she will soon be kicked out of the memorial service, Hal assures her that she
can sit with him. He later assures Margo that while he disagrees with the commissioner's actions, he knows that she was the
best choice for his job. There to meet Jack, Barbara enters the boathouse and
recognizes someone as they approach her. She's shocked to find that person there and asks why they are doing this. Jack hears
her say this and tries to enter but an explosion rips through the boathouse. Jack douses the flames that are ravaging Barbara
who falls and hits her head. Hal rushes inside and administers CPR to the horribly burned Barbara. At the hospital Hal is frantic for word about Barbara after he learns that she's been moved to the burn
unit. He confronts Jack and presses him to go after Craig. Bob and Ben report
to Hal that Barbara is on a ventilator after having a cardiac arrest. Ben adds that there is a small clot which is threatening
her brain. Hal finds Adam and Jennifer at the diner and gives them the terrible
news about Barbara being in critical condition. Shanks reports to Hal that Margo found Craig at the airport. Unable to hold Craig, Margo lets him go which angers Hal and causes him to accuse her of protecting her
brother. Hal confronts Craig as he urges a comatose Barbara to fight for her
life. Craig denies having anything to do with the explosion that hurt Barbara and presses Hal to stop accusing him and, instead,
do all he can to find the real person responsible for Barbara's injuries. Craig
turns to Emily for help finding out who hurt Barbara by using the paper. Hal does the same but tells her he knows that Craig
is responsible. Margo fumes when Jack brings Hal to help with the investigation
at the boathouse. Hal introduces them to Chicago
forensics expert Dr. Bertrand. Margo quickly dislikes her but discovers that "Bertie" has great knowledge about explosives.
Bertie advises them that whoever was crafty enough to set off the crude time bomb, has a "killer's soul." Craig's charred
money clip is found in the ruins of the boat house and while Bertie calls it strong evidence, Margo points out that it is
circumstantial at best. Emily confronts Margo in her new office and asks for
a comment about the arrest of her brother. When Margo's unable to kick her out, she warns the reporter that the evidence against
Craig is circumstantial and she is certain that he is innocent. When Emily snaps
photos of him behind bars, an angry Craig reminds her that he's her boss and then accuses her of using him to try to get close
to Hal. At the boathouse a re-enactment shows Hal that its unlikely that Craig
tried to kill Barbara because of the timing involved. Jack isn't convinced of his innocence and the two argue about their
methods of finding proof against Craig. Hal questions Craig for information about
his whereabouts for the time leading up to the explosion at the boathouse. Craig advises Hal that he doesn't trust him but
then explains that it's impossible for him to have set the bomb to try to kill his wife. Margo's furious to find Hal listening
secretly to Craig chatting with Cass and orders him thrown in jail. Later, after more evidence against Craig in the form of
a footprint is found at the boathouse, Margo has Hal released. Hal tells Jack, he's sure Craig did not set the bomb that hurt
Barbara. When Jennifer goes on and on about Craig's guilt, Hal reminds her that
a person is innocent until proven guilty which surprises Emily. Hal later advises Emily that he's certain Craig had nothing
to do with the bomb that hurt Barbara.
Hal tells a disbelieving Emily
that he believes Craig is not responsible for the explosion that hurt Barbara. She agrees to spike the story if he can convince
her he's right. Hal explains that Craig could not have created the bomb himself and wouldn't have had time to hire someone
to do it since Barbara only found out about his stealing hours before the explosion. Intrigued, Emily offers to help Hal try
to uncover the real threat to Barbara. She then receives a call that Craig's muddy shoes have been traced to footprints outside
the boathouse. After Jennifer runs off upset about Barbara, Hal is encouraged
by Emily to do what he does best and find the person or persons responsible for hurting Barbara. He explains that Craig's
footprints were found some distance from the boathouse. Jennifer's upset to find them together talking about how unlikely
Craig is as a suspect. Hal's impressed when Emily manages to handle his angry teenage daughter and invites her to a barbecue
with him and Will. Emily offers Hal a list of Oakdale residents with ties to
Special Forces. The two then joke about what they like in each other. Emily points
out to Hal that other than Tom's name being on the list of Oakdale residents who were members of the Special Forces, there
is also Albert Norville who worked for Montgomery and Associates in security. They find him working as a bartender. Hal and Emily interview Albert Norville as he tends bar and learn he once told Craig
how to make a truck bomb but assume he's a dead end. Paul is reunited with Jennifer
and Hal who update him on Craig's latest activities and that Barbara moved her hand while Jennifer chatted with her. Emily and Hal invite Tom to help uncover the source of the bomb that hurt Barbara.
Tom insists it's the type used by the CIA but adds anyone has access to that information. Remembering
from Jack that Hal thinks Craig did not try to kill Barbara, Margo seeks Hal's help in Barbara's hospital room. When he mentions
learning that Craig tried to find out how to build a bomb, Margo reveals that Craig years ago attempted to kill Steve Andropolous
who was in love with Betsy, the woman Craig desperately loved. Hal reluctantly assures his worried friend that he will do
all he can to help her. As they leave, Barbara opens her eyes and reaches for Hal but is unable to get his attention. Hal is caught off guard when Jack approaches him at Al's for help with his relationship
with Carly. Hal can't believe that anyone would seek advice about affairs of the heart from him after his many failed marriages.
Jack admits that Carly feels he's sabotaging her efforts to have a career. Pointing out all that led to his divorce from Barbara,
Hal urges Jack to accept Carly for who she is, as hard as that may be. Emily brings Hal check out cards for all the military
books in the library and tries to find out who has been reading them. They laugh to find most have been checked out by Nancy. Confronted about all the military library books she's been checking out, Nancy talks to Hal and Emily
about her volunteer work at the hospital and how she arranges for the delivery of library books to patients. She does admit
that she has no way of knowing which books go to which patients. Hal rushes to her hospital room when he's told that Barbara
has asked for him. Outside in the hallway, Jack seeks confirmation from Hal that
Carly couldn't be involved. Hal won't help and Jessica advises Jack to get Carly an attorney. Hal's
disappointed when Paul stops him from entering Barbara's hospital room and asks him to wait until Barbara asks to see him.
After giving a worried Hal the news that Barbara was attacked yesterday, Emily
slips into her hospital room and tries to question her. After Emily reacts to Barbara's hideous facial burns, Barbara forces
her out and later, Emily guesses to Hal that Barbara won't see him because she's afraid of what he'll say about her face.
Emily then searches the hospital records to find out who's been requesting the bomb-making library books, unaware the stalker
is nearby. Barbara demands that Hal not look at her. Though he insists that he
loves her no matter what she looks like, she states that she is not half the woman she used to be. Barbara then confesses
that she has no feeling, either physically or emotionally and finally screams for him to get out. While Emily searches the records in the hospital, the stalker eyes her photo ID card in her purse and then
slips away. She runs into Hal outside Barbara's room and urges him to go back inside and tell Barbara that he loves her. Later,
she begins to worry when she realizes that someone broke into her car. Hal's
served with a subpoena to testify at Craig's trial.
Emily's unaware when the mystery
stalker breaks into her house and grabs a telephone cord to strangle her. However, his efforts are spoiled when he stumbles
over one of Parker's noisy toy trucks and goes running. Emily calls Hal with her suspicions. Hal arrives just after the stalker
runs out and urges Emily to stay with him. Hal informs Jessica, Margo and Jack
that Craig is innocent. He shows the library checkout slips and then reveals the mystery stalker who's been bothering Emily.
Emily tries to do battle with the mystery stalker in her newspaper office but is almost strangled. She escapes by stabbing
him in the shoulder with a pair of scissors. Hal finds Emily frightened and ends up comforting her. Seeing the blood from
the attacker, Hal decides to have the blood tested in hopes of uncovering the identity of this mystery person. Hal stops Emily from moving back to her place. Getting back the blood test results, Hal and Emily learn
that her attacker had an anti- psychotic drug in their bloodstream. As Barbara
takes the stand, Hal rushes into court and pulls Margo to the hallway to show her the blood test results from Emily's attacker.
He and Emily plead with Margo to give Hal the list of library book borrowers in hopes of pinpointing the attacker. Hoping to explain why her mother won't see her, Hal urges Jennifer to realize that Barbara is not herself
right now. Pointing out that Emily's staying there now, Jennifer announces that she has agreed to move in with Bryant. Hal admits to Emily that Barbara confided she didn't see her attacker at the boat
house and lied about Craig. Emily pleads with him to tell Jessica that her attacker is still out there but he refuses in order
to protect Barbara. As they continue their investigation, the two are unaware that they're being watched. Sierra lays into Craig for the shocking revelation about the kiss and then runs to Hal and offers to hire
him to help prove Craig innocent. Hal refuses the offer.
